How much of a tree’s canopy can be removed at one time?  Research and textbooks state that generally speaking no more then 20% of a tree’s canopy should be removed in one growing season.  If you own a fruiting tree, much less should be removed.  If more is taken then the tree could be come stress and produce “water sprouts”.

Enough with all this tree stuff!  Here is a fun fact about the Joseph brothers.  We both just signed up for the Louisville Ironman in August of 2009.  The race will be a 2.4 mile swim in the Ohio River, a 112 mi. bike ride around Louisville and finally a 26.2 mi marathon to finish the day off!  I do not think we will be doing tree work the next day!

Despite popular believe Dave and Michael do have a life outside of Joseph Tree Service and the fire department and we want to share some of it with you!  In March of 2007 we went to Yosemite Valley to try and climb The Nose on El Capitan.  We tried the previous August with our great friend Carl Meier.  We made it about half way to El Cap tower.  We learned alot and were egar to try again.  

When we returned it was still winter and cold.  The lows were in the 20’s and the highest were perfect in the 50’s.  We made it in 4.5 days of climbing.  After the first day we returned to the ground to rest and wait out a storm that dropped 2′ of snow on the summits.  Other then that storm we had perfect weather.  We hope you enjoy the pictures and feel free to share your adventures

We often get question about pruning trees.  Trees that are 30 years or older are considered “mature trees”.  We suggest only removing broken, dead or rubbing branches.  We also suggest removing neucense branches (ie: low branches or branches that hit your house ect.).   Try hard not to remove branches larger then 3″, because anything larger is difficult for the tree to heal.  With trees that are younger we can do corrective pruning.  This will help insure proper tree growth and branch development.

Found Lukasz Kos’ 4TREEHOUSE online the other day. Wow! The three level structure has a bit of a Japanese feel ot it…when it’s illuminated it reminds me of Close Encounters of a Third Kind.
